Principal Mechanical Engineer

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will work alongside engineers, designers, and researchers in a dynamic environment. You will participate in the daily activities of the Mechanical Engineering team to create meaningful solutions to challenging product design problems. You will take a lead role in the mechanical design and commercialization of innovative medical devices, consumer products, and commercial products by driving detailed development, engineering analysis, and technical documentation. While your primary role will be technical, you’ll also manage projects, and mentor junior engineers. This is a hybrid role from any of our studio locations- Madison, WI., Philadelphia, PA., Boston, MA. or San Francisco, CA. 


Responsibilities
  • Execute mechanical design activities: CAD (Solidworks preferred), design for manufacturability for a range of manufacturing processes (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), prototyping, testing, product quality checks, engineering analyses including FEA simulation, and technical documentation.
  • Serve as a Technical Lead on projects. 
  • Drive engineering excellence by acting as a mentor to junior engineers
  • Partner with the Director of Mechanical Engineering to improve processes and procedures.
  • Oversee and support the planning and preparation of design deliverables and client presentations.
  • Ensure deliverables are met per client expectations and project proposals.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • 10+ years' experience as a Mechanical Engineer, primarily in product development.
  • 5+ years' experience working in consulting.
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary teams and an understanding of what those disciplines do and how it affects your work.


Preferred Experience
  • You have an advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design.
  • You have experience designing within ISO 13485 or other QMS systems and/or Design for Six Sigma training.
  • You are familiar with each stage of the product development process.
  • You are passionate about mechanical engineering and product development.
  • You have a high level of comfort in all client-facing activities and great interpersonal skills.
  • You have excellent writing and presentation skills both needed for workshop facilitation and client presentations.
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity and complexity, because sometimes that leads to the most unique, unexpected design solutions.
  • You want to work in an environment where things move quickly, and you’re happy to adapt as situations shift.
